Why cold chain is hard on board
Refrigerated and frozen logistics combine everything corrugated dislikes: high humidity, condensation and temperature swings. Board that performs perfectly at room temperature can soften and lose strength in a cold, damp environment.
The failure is rarely dramatic. It is a stack that slowly leans, a bin that gives way sooner than its rating suggests — all because the board has quietly absorbed moisture from the cold, humid air.
The condensation trap
The sneakiest problem is condensation on temperature transitions. A cold box pulled into a warm, humid dock sweats, exactly like a cold drink can. That surface moisture soaks into the liner and starts the strength-loss clock.
Planning routes and staging to minimize cold-to-warm-to-cold cycling does as much for box survival as any coating. Every transition is another chance for condensation to form.
What actually holds up
The old answer was wax-coated board, which resists moisture well but cannot be recycled in the normal stream. Modern moisture-resistant coatings aim to protect while staying recyclable, which fits a circular operation far better.

Design for the whole trip
Cold-chain packaging has to survive not one condition but a sequence: cold storage, a humid dock, a chilled trailer, another dock. Spec the box for the harshest point in that sequence, not the average.
That usually means stepping up a wall or adding a barrier liner compared with an ambient shipment of the same goods. The extra cost is trivial next to a collapsed pallet of spoiled product.
